"In my project, I am concerned with the imminent radical changes of tourist regions in Sri Lanka after the end of the civil war in 2009 that had lasted almost thirty years. In 2011, more than 750.000 tourists visited Sri Lanka - never before had so many tourists visited the country in one year. The government is aiming to achieve a number of 2.6 million tourists in the year of 2016 – in a few years, the tourist regions will change drastically."
Yannik Willing's Before Tomorrow, presented in a large newspaper format, seems to embody perfectly the silent transformation of the country, showing a landscape where it is impossible to tell which are the scars from the past and what is the foundation for the future. Even the Srilankan people portrayed by Willing appear to be just waiting for what will come, unsure of how their life will change and how their land will look in a few year's time.
"In questo lavoro ho scelto di riflettere sui drastici cambiamenti che toccheranno le regioni turistiche dello Sri Lanka dopo la fine, nel 2009, di una guerra civile durata trent'anni. Nel 2011 più di 750.000 turisti hanno visitato lo Sri Lanka: mai un così alto numero di persone ha visitato il paese nel corso di un anno. Il governo mira a raggiungere i 2,6 milioni di turisti nel 2016. Nell'arco di pochi anni queste regioni turistiche cambieranno comlpletamente."
Before Tomorrow di Yannik Willing, pubblicato dall'autore in un newspaper di grande formato, esprime perfettamente la trasformazione silenziosa dello Sri Lanka, mostrando un paesaggio dove sembra impossibile distingure tra i segni lasciati dal passato e la costruzione del futuro della regione. Anche le persone ritratte da Willing sembrano rassegnati a attendere ciò che accadrà, come ignari del modo in cui la loro vita cambierà, e di quale aspetto avrà la loro terra nell'arco di qualche anno.
