It might sound like an old refrain to some, but I can't help myself quoting this kind of statement any time I find one:
"We would like to inform the visitor that this web site is merely a documentary tool. Please keep in mind that the rendering of the original gelatin silver prints on a digital platform is only approximate and involves considerable loss of quality, contrast, depth and mid-tones when shown on most computer monitors.
With their very specific tactile values, textures and wide tonal range characteristic of the matt baryte paper and the (mostly) large formats, the original photographs are thus extremely difficult to reproduce.
It goes without saying that only seeing them in reality can do them justice."
Dirk Braeckman's work takes us into a mysterious and yet austere world, where a stark contrast between the elusiveness of his images and their often remarkable sizes induces some kind of hyper-perception in the viewer: glimpses of spaces, blurred details and hidden moments are turned into wide surfaces, like solemn statements about something that can't be pronounced. Deprived of a clear subject but left with eerie hints about what is shown, we can only deal with the uncomfortable (or maybe not) burden of feeling more than what we can actually think, or elaborate, while looking at the images.
It goes by itself that his own website can only be accessed following the request and the (eventual?) grant of a password - but I think that such little initiatic procedure adds the right flavour to the view of Braeckman's photography.
