Shadows and fog

La Havre, 1983

I immediately fell in love with Gilbert Fastenaekens' night photographs, there is something timeless about those roads and those buildings (was he wandering in the dark with Brassaï in another life, did he convince Atget that night could be a great time for work?), something that makes everything look like a scene from an old classic movie, footpaths full of ghosts, closed windows hiding countless stories, amazing images where we feel like we're really witnessing the mystery of the night, in another world where we might not even belong.

Bruxelles, 1983

È stato subito amore per le notti di Gilbert Fastenaekens, c'è un che di senza tempo che attraversa quelle strade e quegli edifici (forse in un'altra vita vagabondava con Brassaï nell'oscurità, oppure ha convinto Atget che la notte è uno splendido momento per lavorare?), qualcosa che fa sembrare tutto come se fosse preso da un vecchio classico della storia del cinema: marciapiedi pieni di fantasmi, finestre chiuse che nascondono mille storie, splendide immagini che ci fanno sentire di fronte al mistero di una notte superba e altera, in un mondo che non sappiamo riconoscere se sia davvero il nostro.
