Leisure views

I imagine that trying to create a body of work focused on the mass consumption of the landscape for tourism and leisure these days must be a dreadful task. It leaves the photographer with the dilemma of how to depict these places and these crowds in a way that can be powerful and at the same time new or at least fresh in respect to all the previous work created on the same theme by artists like Andreas Gursky, Massimo Vitali and Hiromi Tsuchida, to name a few. Patrick Smith is one of those who chose to take the challenge, and even if sometimes there is some kind of feeling of repetition and the echo of the aforementioned photographers is strong, in other moments he finds a way to move freely in those spaces and in those stories, creating an interesting flow of wide views and close-ups of the holyday world.

Immagino che sia ormai un difficile compito quello di voler raccontare per immagini il consumo di massa del paesaggio ad uso turistico e di svago. Lascia il fotografo con il dilemma di come rappresentare quei luoghi e quelle folle in modo efficace e al tempo stesso provare a proporsi come qualcosa di fresco, di nuovo rispetto a ciò che su questa linea è stato prodotto da nomi come Andreas Gursky, Massimo Vitali e Hiromi Tsuchida, per citarne alcuni. Patrick Smith è tra coloro che hanno tentato l'impresa, e anche se a volte c'è un senso di ripetizione e l'eco dei nomi fatti è forte, in altri momenti trova il modo di muoversi liberamente in quegli spazi, creando un interessante flusso che unisce ampie vedute con brusche discese dentro il mondo del tempo libero.
