Quietly sinister

Tutti i lavori di David Moore sembrano avere a che fare con il mostrare quello che si trova sotto la superficie di oggetti, luoghi e interazioni umane apparentemente innocue, isolandoli e mostrandone la natura ambivalente. Scorci di riunioni mondane oppure umanissime tracce lasciate dentro luoghi inaccessibili ci lasciano con una sensazione "placidamente sinistra", che spesso viene aumentata da didascalie che ci ricordano che un'immagine è stata "digitalmente censurata in base alle richieste del Ministero della Difesa", come nel suo ultimo lavoro, The Last Things, realizzato all'interno di una struttura militare situata sotto il centro di Londra. Da confrontare con An American Index of the Hidden and the Unfamiliar di Taryn Simon, un catalogo di tutte le istituzioni 'segrete' della società americana.

All of David Moore's projects seem to deal with revealing what's behind the surface of apparently innocent objects, innocent spaces and innocent human interactions, exposing their ambivalent nature by isolating them. Wether we watch glimpses of social gatherings or extremely human traces left in extremely inaccessible places, a 'quietly sinister' feeling pervades his images, often enhanced by captions reminding us that an image is 'Digitally censored in compliance with MoD requirements', like in his latest project The Last Things, shot inside a secure military location below ground in central London. Quite interesting is the comparison between his images and Taryn Simon's An American Index of the Hidden and the Unfamiliar, a catalogue of all the 'secret' insitutions of American society.
