What you see is what you get

Pochi hanno indagato l'atto del guardare un'immagine fotografica come Mike Mandel (le puntate precedenti qui e qui), sia insieme a Larry Sultan (e altri), sia nei suoi lavori in proprio. Molte delle sue opere sono degli autentici saggi visivi, che interrogano il contenuto delle immagini e la relazione che hanno con il loro contesto, con lo scopo di svelare i diversi strati di significato che possono nascondersi in una fotografia e nell'uso che ne viene fatto.

Mandel ha raccolto su Flickr estratti dai suoi diversi progetti, dove quindi è ora possibile godervi una bella panoramica del suo percorso creativo, ad esempio date un'occhiata a How To Read Music In One Evening del 1974, oppure a Newsroom, 1983, praticamente mai visti prima sul web (grazie ancora a Shane Lavalette, che ha anche scritto una'interessante cronaca di una lezione con Mandel un paio di anni fa).

Few have investigated the act of looking at photographic images as Mike Mandel did (previous episodes here and here), both teamed up with Larry Sultan and other creative partners or on his own. Many of his works ar authentic visual essays, questioning the content of an image in relation with its context, in an effort to disclose all the layers of meaning that can be hidden inside a photograph and most of all inside the use that can be done of that image.
Mandel has collected excerpts from many of his projects in a group of Flickr sets, where you can now enjoy a great overview of this great body of work. Take a look for example at How To Read Music In One Evening, 1974, Newsroom, 1983, previously almost never seen on the web (thanks again to Shane Lavalette, who also wrote a nice record of a lesson with Mandel a couple of years ago).
