Metropoli private

Spesso nelle nostre menti possiamo essere tremendamente convinti che New York è ‘New York’ e Istanbul è ‘Istanbul’, sappiamo grosso modo chi sono i ‘newyorkesi’ (che ci piace saper distinguere dagli americani in generale) e i ‘turchi’, tante immagini conosciamo, tante cose abbiamo sentito o letto. Poi però bussiamo alla porta di una casa di Istanbul, ad esempio, entriamo, e le cose possono sembrarci piuttosto differenti.

We are often deeply convinced that New York is ‘New York’ and Istanbul is ‘Istanbul’, we more or less believe to know who the New Yorkers (we like the fact we distinguish them from the Americans in general) or the Turkish people are, so many images we saw, so many things we heard or read. Then we knock at the door of a house in Istanbul, we go in, and things can look quite different.
